MUSIC: The history of music confirms that no indigenous music has ever sprung up
suddenly from hitherto barren grounds. It seems that there must always be a period
of preparation, a period during which creations are tested and developed when at
last a true merit is discovered.
Sinhala music is no exception. For centuries our music was confined to the carters
songs, the boatman's songs, the pel kavi, the harvesting songs etc. but in the course
of time as they came into contact with developed forms from across the Palk Straits,
they began to develop considerably.
